Exam Preparation Guide
Proper preparation helps ensure the highest quality images and the most accurate diagnosis. Please review the guidelines for your specific exam below.
MRI Preparation
- 1Remove all metal objects including jewelry, watches, and piercings
- 2Inform staff of any implants (pacemakers, cochlear implants, metal plates)
- 3Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing without metal fasteners
- 4You may eat and drink normally unless instructed otherwise
- 5Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment
- 6If you experience claustrophobia, ask about our Open MRI option
PET/CT Preparation
- 1Do not eat or drink (except water) for 6 hours before the exam
- 2Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours before the scan
- 3Diabetic patients: consult with our staff about insulin adjustments
- 4Wear warm, comfortable clothing
- 5The exam takes approximately 60–90 minutes
- 6You will receive an injection of a radioactive tracer
Digital X-Ray Preparation
- 1Minimal preparation required — walk-ins welcome
- 2Remove jewelry or metal objects from the area being imaged
- 3Inform the technologist if you may be pregnant
- 4Wear clothing that can be easily removed if necessary
- 5The exam typically takes 10–15 minutes
Ultrasound Preparation
- 1Abdominal ultrasound: Do not eat or drink for 8 hours prior
- 2Pelvic ultrasound: Drink 32 oz of water 1 hour before, do not urinate
- 3OB ultrasound: Follow your physician's specific instructions
- 4Wear loose, comfortable clothing
- 5The exam typically takes 30–45 minutes
DEXA Scan Preparation
- 1Do not take calcium supplements for 24 hours before the exam
- 2Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal zippers or buttons
- 3Inform staff of any recent barium exams or contrast injections
- 4The scan takes approximately 15–20 minutes
- 5Results are typically available within 24–48 hours
